Which of the 5 pin, 7 pin and 13 pin trailer socket products should I prefer? What are the differences between the number of pins / plugs / poles of the trailer socket and plug products?

If you have a Class O1 trailer weighing less than 750 kg, you can use a 7-pin trailer socket in your vehicle so that only the brake, signal, parking and fog light functions in your trailer work smoothly.

If you have a Class O2 trailer or a caravan weighing more than 750 kg, you can use a 13-pin socket in your vehicle so that your vehicle both charges your life battery and handles the brake, signal, parking, fog and reversing light functions.

The two extra pins of the 7-pin socket add two more trailer functions to the 5-pin socket, including reversing lights and service brakes (electronic brake control).  You can connect a trailer with a 5-pin plug to a 7-pin socket or vice versa, but the pins are wired differently, which can cause unexpected problems with the electrical wiring of your vehicle!
